Abstract

ABSTRACT This thesis is dealing with activities in the field of chemistry in the XVIIIth century Ottoman Empire taking as its basis the work "Mürşid el- Muhtar fi Dm el-Esrar" written by one of the representatives of iatrochemistry trend in Ottoman State Bursalı Ömer Şifaî (?-1742). In the thesis the above mentioned text was transmissed to modern Turkish language with necessary critical-editorial work being done and an effort was made to show the condition of chemistry in the XVIIIth century Ottoman Empire. Iatrochemistry trend was established by Paracelsus(1493-1541) in XVIth century. In his work Ömer Şifaî presented various metals, compositions obtainned as the reault of subjecting metals to chemical operations and ways and forms of their usage in medical treatment of diseases. Such a work reflects the general characteristics of the texts on iatrochemistry, and Ömer Şifaî has reflected the iatrochemistry trend in the XVIIIth century Ottoman chemistry activities. Therefore, this work has secured separation from alchemical activities in Ottoman Empire and transition to chemical acthivities, on the one hand, and beginning of the process of passing to the modern chemistry, on the other hand. Besides this, it has cotributed to a considerable extent to formation of the chemical terminology in Ottoman Turkey.
