Abstract
This dissertation compares and contrast traditional and contemporary approaches in the Islamic literature in determining the authenticity of ahadith and their understanding and interpretation. We discuss in this work the limits of the traditional approaches and the contributions of new ones in various dimensions.This Phd thesis that we prepared consists of 3 main chapters, excluding the introduction and conclusion sections. In the first chapter, the problems that stem from the dictation of the ravi names in the context of Classical Hadith Methodology are tackled. Also, as an example in the same context, how Zuhri?s students named their teacher is analyzed. This way, some allusions about the authenticity of the early Hadith Literacy Tradition are tried to set forth.In the second chapter, a report (rivayah) examination is done as an example. In this examination, data about the report?s text and isnad are collected and all sources in the Islamic Literature are troughly scanned. All the data in the classical literature about the interpretation of the report are presented.In the third chapter, the methods and approaches that are used in the Western countries to understand and date the rivayah are studied. A through and detailed analysis of the rivayah that is examined in the second chapter is also done in this chapter.In the conclusion, the historical validity of the example rivayah is discussed, and the outcome of the analyses that are done in the previous chapters is evaluated.
