Abstract

Many Qur’anic studies have been published by Western scholars since 1950s. One of the most important features in the relevant studies of this period is the multiplicity of approaches, directions, and styles. These studies have mainly focused directly on the text and history of the Qur’an, old Qur’anic manuscripts, and tafsīr literature. John Wansbrough seems to have a strong influence on the trends that criticize the text of the Qur’an. His approach has a large following as well as wide opposition in the West. There are a lot of multi-author works produced by skillful editors. Among these, Brill’s Encyclopaedia of the Qurʾān is undoubtedly one of the greatest achievements of the Western scholarship. One should not overlook the contribution of the Corpus Coranicum Project, which provides a very large database of ancient Qur’anic manuscripts, to the field.
